Inaugural 2016 SEASON
Founded in late 2015 to provide local kids with the opportunity to access the game in the Bayside area of Melbourne. The Racing Rugby Club of Melbourne inaugural season of 2016 proved to be a great success with teams representing the club in the U6, U7, U8, U9, and U11 age groups as part of the Victorian Rugby Union junior pathway and competition programs.
What was originally meant to be just two teams quickly expanded to four including nineteen enthusiastic U6/U7 age group players pulling on the sky-blue and white, taking part in the VRU’s Rebel Rascals program. The club was also well represented with an U11 and combined U13/U14 Rugby 7's as well as several Touch Football teams making their mark at the Harlequins and Bendigo Goldfield 7’s tournaments.
Rapid growth is not without its problems however and even with a couple of experienced campaigners at the helm in Andrew Stanford and Dwayne Jury resources were often stretched. With the need to develop players, coaches and managers with only nine out of the sixty players having previously played one or more season of rugby. Fortunately for the club founders the community responded, and we received tremendous support from a number of sponsors particularly Blueprint Commercial, Devco Master Builders, Modo Australia. Along with Vic Heath through the Active Club Grants program, and the Sandringham Athletics and the Kiwi Hawthorn Rugby Clubs. Who were extremely generous with allowing our club to base our training or play matches on their grounds throughout the season.
Racing Rugby formed an affiliation with The Melbourne University Rugby Football Club as a senior only club. Providing ball boys for a number of their Dewar Shield home games throughout the season.
Off the back of a successful inaugural season word of mouth spread that Racing was here to stay Leading to the introduction of another three teams including a girls U8-U11 non-contact VIVA 7’s team. Who had the honour of playing before and during half time at the Australia V Fiji match in June at AAMI Park. As well as part of a combined exhibition of women’s and girls Rugby 7’s at the Bendigo Goldfield 7’s against several of the Australian Olympic gold medal Perl’s players.
With well over a hundred players the club fielded teams in the U6/U7, U8, U9, U10, and a U12 age groups as part of the Victorian Rugby Union junior pathway and competition programs. Playing in its first finals and having two players selected in the Victorian U12’s team who played the ACT in Canberra in October.
Our U10 team made up of players playing their first or second seasons gathered a reputation as a skilful entertaining unit and were worthy winners of the Harlequins Rugby 7’s. Whilst our combined U11/U12’s exceeded all expectations with only four of the twelve having played rugby previously. Were unfortunate not to also win their age group going down by a try in the end to Brimbank who they defeated convincingly earlier in the tournament.
Following another challenging year the club held a successful combined AGM and Presentation Day again at Packer Park, Carnegie. Where the club received an outstanding endorsement from its members, and the election of twelve members to the committee to lead it towards an even brighter future.
