About Racing Rugby
Inspired by the colours of the French Racing 92 club, the Racing Rugby Club
of Melbourne has somewhat similar beginnings to its famous namesake, which
originally started as an amateur athletics (racing) club in metropolitan Paris
in 1882. Our story involves a group of passionate athletics and rugby
parents from Brighton wanting to develop a rugby footprint in their local
Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston, and Port Phillip municipalities.
The Racing Rugby Club of Melbourne was originally a junior only club which
affiliated with the Rugby Victoria in 2015. Quickly establishing four sides in
its first year in 2016 and a Rugby Touch 7’s competition for girls within a
couple of years. In 2024 due to growing demand, we have for the first time established
an U20 Colts program in conjunction with another partner club. As a growing
club with a bright future, we hope to have our first senior side along sometime
soon with a robust junior program behind us.
Our club prides itself on being a truly Australian rugby experience and as custodians
of the game’s traditional values. We have families who come from a non-rugby
background who have embraced the sport here is Melbourne. As well as strong
expat community from the United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Hong
Kong, Fiji, and other pacific nations.
We offer qualified coaching for boys and girls from five years and above. With
players having the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game and meet new
friends. We focus on leadership, knowledge of the game, skills, and
conditioning in a safe environment where a strong sense of equality,
sportsmanship and fair play are insisted upon. Among players, coaches, parents,
and spectators.
Success has come relatively quickly to the club. With multiple Victorian and
age group Melbourne Rebels representatives, Rugby 7s competition wins, and an inaugural
premiership with our 2022 U11’s.
As a community club with strong links with the local public and private
primary and secondary school communities in the area by
introducing the game as part of a sports or after school care
program. Rugby Victoria and the Melbourne Rebels regularly offer opportunities
to engage with the community and take part in activities during the Super Rugby
Pacific season at AAMI Park or during international matches here in Melbourne.
Our club assist in developing the game in the local community by
sponsoring and hosting both boys and girls Touch7’s and Rugby 7's gala days,
skills development academies and holiday programs. We also have a senior
cricket program during the summer months and support the development of the
game through Touch Football and the Rugby AU “Get into Rugby” clinics.
